Academics

English as a Second Language

English as a Second Language (ESL) is a program of intensive English instruction using second language methodologies designed to develop proficiency in comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing skills. All classrooms have a print rich environment where everything is labeled. Students are encouraged to ask questions and use daily phrases in English. Students in Grades 3 and up are also enrolled in DuoLingo. The online program allows students to practice speaking, reading, listening, and writing to build your vocabulary and grammar skills.

Language Arts

Language Arts includes second language acquisition in the domains of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. The curriculum includes the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills that apply for each grade level. A variety of literature is used for the development of reading strategies, literary interpretation, and appreciation. Literature selections also serve as models for writing. During the 2020-21 school year, students will be enrolled in EPIC, a digital library that includes popular eBooks, and literary videos

Mathmatics

Mathematics includes second language acquisition in the domains of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. The curriculum includes the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills that apply for each grade level. This course provides instruction in the academic language of mathematics.   Students in Grades 3 and up are also enrolled in ALEKS, an online math program that delivers a personalized learning path on the exact topics each student is most ready to learn.

Science & Health

Science/Health includes second language acquisition in the domains of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. The curriculum includes the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills that apply for each grade level. During the 2020-21 school year, students in Grades 3 and up will be enrolled in Scientific Minds. The program supports scientific literacy, vocabulary acquisition, ESL strategies, review tools,  and test preparedness.

Physical Education

Physical Education involves achieving and maintaining the optimal physical, mental, emotional and social well-being of the student. Activities include team-based sports when applicable, as well as individual challenges. Lifelong activities are introduced and practiced to help students maintain healthy lifestyles.

Art

Art includes second language acquisition in the domains of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.  The curriculum includes the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills that apply for each grade level. Instruction focuses on drawing, painting, collage, mixed media, and sculpture while building vocabulary development.
